Pikkewyntjies provides Early Childhood Education for children who might otherwise miss out on this vital learning phase. Some years back the teachers noticed that many of the children were listless and unable to concentrate until after the mid-morning sandwiches and realised the children were not being fed at home. Since then a feeding scheme has been introduced to provide breakfast before school and a hot lunch as well as a snack before the end of the day.
There is no need for a South African in 2018 to point out to other South Africans how expensive it has become to buy 500 grams of mince, the electricity to cook a pot of soup or the ingredients to make play dough for a school of 40 children.
It's enough to say the school could do with more of the kind of wonderful supporters they have who find that R20 or R50 note to eft each month to ensure our kids get as good a start in life as if they were in the grandest school in the country.
If you can't spare that note, no one understands better than we do. You can still help us, very much, if you wish, by speaking to friends and family about donating any items they no longer use to the second hand shop in the Village Centre in Betty's Bay. (It's on the same level as Sandcastle Estate Agents - at the end of the passage).
Chances are, however, you don't know the school exists or that it is responsible for its own finances and has no sponsor. If we could take up the Xplorio team on their generous offer, we'd have exposure, people in the Overberg like you would read about the school and maybe find it possible to donate R50 or those second-hand saleable items.
We'd save it, every R5 of it until we had R650 in the kitty marked "Xplorio" and we could approach the team to ask them to draw traffic our way when strangers look up Betty's Bay. It costs much more than that normally but Xplorio is making a donation to the school too.
