i-MED Africa

About

i-MED Africa was established in Masakhane, Gansbaai, a township about two hours from Cape Town International Airport. 

The project has grown to provide sustainable improvements in Masakhane, Blompark, Baardskeerdersbos, Buffeljag, and Stanford by providing support in medical care, education and child nutrition.

i-Med Africa Overview

i-MED Africa has a strong team that includes full-time employees and volunteers, who are all experts in their fields. Each team member forms a crucial part of the organisation’s operational functionality and the project’s success.

Eloise van Tonder - Managing Director / Project Manager

• Business management and administration (three-year course)
• Basic home caring certification
• Previous work experience at medical centres, and a local clinic 

Nosabata Nodlolo - Director / Health Training Educator

• Health education qualifications (early childhood ailments and diseases)
• Healthcare qualifications (HIV, AIDS, and TB)
• Nutritional health qualification 
• Community welfare qualification

Dr Bärbel Reckhardt - Medical Doctor / Partner

• From i-Med Vision

Prof Markus Reckhardt - Medical Doctor / Partner

• From i-Med Vision
• Head of the Center for Neurology and Pain Management, Klinikum Niederlausitz, Germany
• Professor at the Institute of Medical Informatics at the Brandenburgische Technische University in Cottbus, Germany

Ronel Le Roux - Psychiatric Nurse

• Registered psychiatric nurse with 33 years of extensive experience in mental health
• Worked at psychiatric hospitals and provided psychiatric services in communities

Zokhanyo Bikani - Agricultural Training Facilitator

• Over a decade of experience in the agricultural and conservation sphere
• Facilitator qualification at the University of South Africa

Lisa Graham - Director (volunteer)

• PhD in Immunology from the University of Cape Town
• Lecturer 
• Extended curriculum program course coordinator in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (research interests lie in innate immunity, inflammation, and infectious diseases)

Community Health Services

i-MED Africa provides the community with improved medical care and support that includes:

• Paediatric services for over 4,000 children under the age of twelve 
• Medical information that includes first aid and education about common diseases
• Health education to prevent diseases
• Medical Assistance (by appointment on pre-arranged clinic days only)

Mental Health & Wellness Services

i-MED Africa started its pilot mental health programme in 2022, with a focus on mental health education and creating awareness around mental health in rural communities.

In partnership with i-MED Vision, workshops on various mental health topics are hosted for the community. The workshops cover topics such as:

Abuse

• Woman
• Substance

Mental Wellness

• Anxiety
• Depression
• Bipolar Disorder
• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Ongoing support groups and safe spaces are created within the community to help manage the symptoms of mental health.

Gardens Project

Establishing a garden where fresh produce and medicinal plants are grown is a holistic solution to improving nourishment and achieving sustainable health care.

Health & Training Gardens

• Organic principles are used to ensure minimal environmental impact and high nutritional levels
• Practices are based on maximum food production in limited space
• Low-cost agricultural methods are used
• Support visits (to ensure the longevity of each home garden)  

Skills Development & Entrepreneurship

• Provide student training
• Skills development in agriculture and entrepreneurship
• Generate a sustainable income and create entrepreneurship opportunities for students
