Workplace absences for childcare reasons is a reality, and I am sure you had your fair share of employees you feel used it as an excuse.
Here in the beautiful Hermanus, we are blessed with lovely rainy weather today. I find it the best type of weather for me to be the most productive, but the opposite might be true for other people.
Today I want to talk about a common problem I am sure a lot of you are challenged with.
ABSENTEEISM
Absenteeism is a reality for most organisations. And yes, people do get sick, but people also pretend to be sick. The art is to get behind the employees who pretend to be sick and find out why.
Do your employees or team members feel that their lives stop when they are at work and only start again when they go home? Do you employees or team members find their work meaningful?
What do you do or how to you act to manage your companies sick leave? Do you prefer a frank approach, or do you prefer a more subtle approach?
The bottom line is that you must address the matter. There are various options on how to address it, but one such option is to have a “return to work interview”. For more information on this, please contact us.
In an article written by Caroline Forcey, she writes about five proven strategies to decrease employee absenteeism.
1) Implement a wellness programme - by taking steps to create a workplace culture that prioritize health and wellness, e.g. having an office yoga or kickboxing class during lunchtime.
2) Offer vacation days and paid time off. Take the stress out of limited days off. Help employees to feel happy about their work-life balance.
3) Consider flexible hours - allow people to use time for themselves and let them commit to deliver by a certain date.
4) Improve workplace morale. Are your employees still excited to come to work?
5) Encourage employee engagement. Employee engagement is critical for workplace success.
