Workplace absences for childcare reasons is a reality, and I am sure you had your fair share of employees you feel used it as an excuse.
I want to encourage you today to be consistent with workplace discipline. Yes, I know, it is not what you signed up for, but it can be the make or break in a disciplinary scenario. A chairperson will always consider the consistency in which discipline has been applied and must take it into consideration when determining a sanction. When your employee lodge a constructive dismissal at the CCMA, what is one of the questions that will be asked? Was discipline applied consistently.
1. It means that all employees who commit the same misconduct must be treated the same way. This does not mean they will necessarily receive the same sanction.
2. It means that the employer must act every time when a rule is transgressed.
1. Make sure your employees know the rules and the implication of transgressing the rules.
2. Keep record of your employees’ disciplinary records.
And remember, HELP is just one email away.
